my ceramics journey
About me
Hi, I’m Julia. I’m 36 and I live in Ōtepoti. I started playing with clay again 3 years ago when I was looking for a non-dangerous and non-time consuming hobby. Ha ha… Now I am absolutely hooked and have decided to make it my full time pursuit.
my story
I joined the Otago Potters Group in 2020 when I was pregnant. I figured playing with clay was going to be a much more realistic hobby than rock climbing with a newborn. It became a bit of an obsession, and I tried to sign up for every wheel class available.
When my son was born I started reading about clay, and I borrowed books on the science of ceramics, particularly about glaze chemistry. Unfortunately baby brain might actually be a thing and I will have to re-read a lot of what I studied during that time.
This year I took the plunge. I signed up for the level 5 diploma in ceramics at Te Pūkenga, and it is the best decision I have ever made. I am studying part time, which theoretically gives me plenty of time to spend with my child as well as to play with clay, learn, and develop as an artist.
