Textured Slab Soda Fired Mug

Description

This small (espresso) sized mug was built from a slab of clay that I textured with embroidered fabric. It has a loose carefree style and an undulating rim. It is glazed inside with tenmoku, and the outer the rim and handle has my turquoise glaze. The glaze has run and dripped where the soda hit and interacted with it, inside there are almost golden streaks where the glazes have melted together, and on the outside blue and turquoise drips. The body of the mug is a rich brown where it was sheltered from soda, and grey where it was hit with soda during firing.

This mug is made of NZ clay, it is Macs Mud buff stoneware. It was soda fired in reduction to cone 10 in the kiln at the Otago Potters Group ‘Josephine’. It is 7cm tall, and holds 120mL.
